jimski2 Posted April 11, 2018 Report Posted April 11, 2018 Early spring perch, from ice off to end of spawning, can be found in shallow water, like ten foot of water and less. Using light action spinning rods with a split shot or two and a double hook, and emerald shiners, cast off the boat and slowly bring the minnow back to the boat. The boat spooks the perch away but by casting out you can reach the perch schooling up to prepare to spawn in the warmer shallow water. Even if ice is present they will be there on the beach. Casting away from the boat will bring the perch closer as they follow the slow moving minnows. 5
jimski2 Posted April 12, 2018 Author Report Posted April 12, 2018 South Shoreline ice all the way to the Dunkirk Lighthouse. One boat out off Van Buren Bay, first of the year. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United 1
J. Sparrow Posted April 20, 2018 Report Posted April 20, 2018 Looks like the ice is gone! With a forecast of less than a foot for Saturday and Sunday, and temperatures approaching "normal", it looks pretty inviting.

Locoman Posted April 22, 2018 Report Posted April 22, 2018 It's cyclical. This is the worst I've seen it since the mid 80's. Time will tell.

Js003c Posted April 24, 2018 Report Posted April 24, 2018 I’d be curious to know what most are using for bait since emeralds are scarce right now to say the least. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United

Fitz67 Posted April 26, 2018 Report Posted April 26, 2018 There is typically perch in the small boat harbor this time of year or you can try the canal at squaw island next to the lock.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a map of the lake with all the local names/sites to sometimes make it easier. 1
jimski2 Posted May 18, 2018 Author Report Posted May 18, 2018 Good perch catches coming in now from mud bottom waters like fifty five foot and deeper. The spawn should be over as surface waters are reported to be fifty degrees F.
H20chrome Posted May 18, 2018 Report Posted May 18, 2018 Would right out in front of Dunkirk this time of year in that depth range be worth trying to locate perch? im in a 12 footer so thats the closest depth I know of close to shore and comfortable distance heading out thanks
