Robc84 Posted June 27, 2017 Report Posted June 27, 2017 Another newbie with lots of questions I'm new to fishing lake erie. I just upgraded from a 16ft aluminum boat with a 25hp to a 21 foot deep v boat with a v6 inboard. So my question is where's a good place to get weather and wave info on lake erie? Any favorite sites or even better is there any app I can get? And also as a beginner and type of boat i have what size waves should I safely be able to handle out there and still be able to fish. I appreciate the advice and have tons more questions but this seems like a good place to start.
dwiese77 Posted June 27, 2017 Report Posted June 27, 2017 One place is the NOAA.gov website for great lakes forecasts. Navigating a boat in the great lakes comes down to a lot of experience and your comfort level. Driving through waves vs trolling is different as well. If they are predicting more than 1-3ft waves i would stay off the lake. even those waves can toss you around and push your boat all over until you are used to it. Trolling with the waves is a good way to go but remember you still need to go against them at some point. 1
fishmaster Posted June 27, 2017 Report Posted June 27, 2017 I have found the iwindsurf app to be very accurate in predicting the wind speed and direction. A good rule of thumb is that for every 5mph of wind you can expect 1 foot of wave height. 1
dukhnter8 Posted June 27, 2017 Report Posted June 27, 2017 http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45142 This is a bouy that is in Lake Erie, good for waves (height multiply by 2 for real wave height and frequency-dominant wave period or how fast the waves are coming). 1
Captain Crabbie Posted June 29, 2017 Report Posted June 29, 2017 Underground marine.com. if they call for anything out of the Southwest just stay homeSent from my XT1585 using Lake Erie United Mobile App 2
Jaybird904 Posted June 30, 2017 Report Posted June 30, 2017 I like windy.com always double the wave height they predict. I have a 20 foot boat and anything over 3 feet isn't fun. Good luck. I also agree with fish master 1 foot per 5mph is about right. 10 mph or less and you are good to go. Over 10 and the direction of the wind can make a big difference. Jesse669 Posted June 30, 2017 Report Posted June 30, 2017 There is a app called "surfing lakes" and is usually pretty accurate in forecasting the waves and weather. When you get into the app just go under the weather forecast section and it will tell you both wave and weather forecastSent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United 2
Dmd113 Posted June 30, 2017 Report Posted June 30, 2017 1-3 ft is about the max I want to mess with. The boat can handle it but the fun factor is in the basement! 1
