King Slammin Posted March 6, 2017 Report Posted March 6, 2017 I use my terrova only. It's stealthy and the autopilot is great. Just record a track, and backtrack it for the rest of the night. Only drawback is battery life. I usually get 5-6 hrs on average, but sometimes only 3 if I'm fighting the wind. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

Ten Percent Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Hey King....are you guys typically only catching those say 2-4 pound males in the spring @ night? or can you also tie into some nicer fish? just curious....any eye is a great eye
Ten Percent Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 I've got the 36V.... I think 112lbs thrust... it will run all day if its not too windy. So far, I mostly use it perch fishing with the spot lock, but plan on working it into my trolling this year
King Slammin Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Generally it's all the eater sized males, which is what I'm after anyway. Sometimes we hook into a decent one but I've never caught any over 7-8 lbs in a spring night trip. I sight fish them on spot lock sometimes to with a headlamp as long as it's calm out. That is an absolute blast. I use the terrova as autopilot when trolling for salmon and walleye, with the big motor as thrust. Once you try that, you'll be spoiled. Lol. I would love to add a kicker and upgrade to the 36v ultrex but I'm looking into upgrading electronics this yearSent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Def boy Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Looking to purchase an electric trolling motor this spring for my 14' aluminium... What lb thrust should i be looking for? Thanks
King Slammin Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 You will be fine with any of the 12v units in a 14 footer. Get the largest thrust you can afford so it's running on a lower setting, battery life will last longer. You can probably find a nice used one from bigger boats upgrading to a 24 or 36 volt systemSent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
RD9 Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 We catch all the eyes we want just off the reefs in the day time and we are all alone. Move out to 20 to 30 ft and run two and three colors with sticks. They are usually glued to the bottom. We do a lot of s patterns in our trolling pattern dropping the baits to there face. 2

I do the same bouncing harnesses. There's just something about hitting WOT, with a cooler full of perfect eaters, on a calm night, with the lights on the shoreline. My favorite part of the night.Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

RD9 Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 (edited) Dunkirk NY. I'm sure you can do it off any reef in NY. It's just that the old school way of thinking is that those fish feed during the night and that the water is to cold or something. Most ny guys start fishing in late May and bitch about water temp or waiting for fish to swim from Ohio. They are just miss informed. Edited March 9, 2017 by RD9 Add pic 1
RD9 Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 on the speed question. We troll faster then most of the time. This time of year I like around two mph. We also catch plenty of bass Lakers and Browns.

Ilikejager42 Posted March 11, 2017 Report Posted March 11, 2017 Any thoughts on if I put a 24 volt trolling motor on my swim platform instead of a kicker motor?Sent from my VS990 using Lake Erie United Mobile App

RD9 Posted March 11, 2017 Report Posted March 11, 2017 one thing that is a struggle in the locations on this end is the structure. If you are going to troll segmented cores in tight and you want to catch these fish. Prepare yourself to loose some gear. We do catch em on deep husky jerks on mono but a two or three color with your stick just off the bottom on you're turns can be frustrating. We always giggle we are coming in while the night time guys are going out.
Dmd113 Posted March 12, 2017 Author Report Posted March 12, 2017 Rd9 any colors better than others? Favorites?

Seems like maybe less gear may be list that way, but still near bottomSent from my SM-G900V using Lake Erie United Mobile App
