Dmd113 Posted February 27, 2017 Report Posted February 27, 2017 Fishing shallow night time I'm new to Erie spring night fishing. I would appreciate input when it comes to the benefit of using an electric trolling motor as an alternative to a kicker or main motor. How much of an advantage is the stealthier presentation & do you feel it is worth the effort?
King Slammin Posted February 27, 2017 Report Posted February 27, 2017 I only use my terrova. Once the batteries die, I go home. A quiet four stroke kicker should be fine too. I just like the autopilot aspect, and stealth of a terrovaSent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Eyestopper Posted February 27, 2017 Report Posted February 27, 2017 Just remember to troll east / west with the other boats or you will make a lot of enemies real fast!Sent from my SM-G928V using Lake Erie United Mobile App 2
Dmd113 Posted February 27, 2017 Author Report Posted February 27, 2017 I've heard about the "combat trolling" & "dock dances" that occur yearly. I have never fished Erie at night but fish walleye there regularly during the day time. I normally fish an inland lake in the spring at night but the stocking program was discontinued & fishing has really fallen off. Quote
yellowpike Posted February 27, 2017 Report Posted February 27, 2017 Fish during the week. If possible less boat traffic more fish and a whole less stressful Sent from my VS986 using Lake Erie United Mobile App 2
yankmyline Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 Electric trolling can be much more precise.
Dmd113 Posted February 28, 2017 Author Report Posted February 28, 2017 How does the electric trolling motor handle with cross winds & cross currents? Fishind a Robalo R200 center console 3000# dry weight.
King Slammin Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 In good up to 3 footers or so. But if it's much more than that, it's usually muddy in shallow so I'm not out there. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

Ten Percent Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 Hey... King Slammin what are some of the traditional early spring night time areas to try? Do guys go out from different ports. do you guys run inline planar boards at night? or rod in hand? just curious....I love night fishing for eyes, but have never fished Erie at night
King Slammin Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 Meyers reef, Seneca shoal, smokes creek, Hamburg shoreline in front of hoaks, Dunkirk shoreline and reefs. Pretty much anywhere along the shore or reefs that you can get into that 7-12' range. I have run boards with glow sticks but usually just Rod in hand for me. Bay rat shallows, husky jerks, shadow raps, scatter raps. It's all a guessing game, and a lot of changing of baits, but when you find what they want that night, limits come quickSent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App 1
lineman49 Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 If you fish the traditional night spots I don't think you need to worry about being real stealth with the number of other boats being out there. I know the times we fished it was rod in hand. 2
J. Sparrow Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 I've spent lots of daytime hours walleye fishing on Erie, but never done it at night.......... It's intimidating to me, and so it's tough to learn it...... If anyone is ever looking for a fishing partner, please let me know via PM...... I'd be happy to share in the expenses.
overthelimit Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 I can't stand the spring nite bite. Way to many boats and jackwagons out there to make it enjoyable. Haven't even bothered trying in a couple years. That being said you'd be much better off with an electric. Stealth. 2
lineman49 Posted March 3, 2017 Report Posted March 3, 2017 We fished near Hamburg beach a few years ago & there had to be 200 boats there any thing from a canoe to a 25 footer. It was nuts some had lights, some did not, guys yelling at each other. I have only been out a few times at night after that & if its crowded I stay away from the pack. 1
Ten Percent Posted March 3, 2017 Report Posted March 3, 2017 Thanks guys..sounds like it can get crazy...as yellow pike or someone noted, perhaps I'd try during the week to try and avoid the crowdsSent from my SM-G900V using Lake Erie United Mobile App 1
King Slammin Posted March 3, 2017 Report Posted March 3, 2017 Don't let it scare you. Just go out and try it once or twice. It's actually not too bad. The weekends are definitely worse than weekdays. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
yellowpike Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 (edited) like king said don't worry about all the boats there are lot of places to troll at along the shore line some are just better than others here a app to look at http://webapp.navionics.com/#boating@6&key={uidG~~a`N along hamburg , smokes creeks, woodlawn bar, evans bar, eigthteen mile creek area is good John Edited March 4, 2017 by yellowpike 1
Ten Percent Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 Thanks John/YP...I Def will give it a whirl..always loved night fishing Oneida, Hoye, Conesus & Chemung river system...do you try running in line boards at night? Or just rod in hand?Sent from my SM-G900V using Lake Erie United Mobile App

yellowpike Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 my big motor I have a trolling plate i can get down to 1.5
Dmd113 Posted March 6, 2017 Author Report Posted March 6, 2017 I went from big motor with trolling plate to kicker shallow & increased catch rate. I was wondering what opinions were on going to electric trolling motor ? benefits? Potential problems? etc...
