garrymny Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 Tried to fish yesterday out of SBH. Both NOAA and the Windy App forecasts said 2 feet or less. Went out of the South gap and had to come back in. Waves were 5 feet. Ridiculous. This happened a couple weeks ago. Oh, and the ice boom camera is also useless. Resolution is so poor. It looked smooth. NOT. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Erie United Mobile App

What is the best wind direction for calm waves. I assume South?Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Erie United Mobile App
jimski2 Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 Fishing in the inner harbor in the “27 foot steamboat channel is better there than outside the breakwaters. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Thumbburn Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 South for sureSent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United 1
Gobbler Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 Try Windfinder APP then double their wave height estimate and that will get you in the ball park
Dcra Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 As fisherman, we all know the marine forecast can't be trusted. I only go out if the forecast is 10mph or less, or waves a foot or less. Many times it's twice that. If the forecast is for waves 2 feet or less, I don't even bother. The ice boom camera looks great, but it is useless for predicting wave heights. It's too bad there's not more weather cams on the eastern end of the lake, like at the Small Boat Harbor, or Sturgeon Point (there use to be), or Cattaraugus Creek.
dukhnter8 Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45142 This is a good place to look but generally double the wave height. Also dominant wave period can tell a lot, if its short it will be very bad. When I was out Sunday it was 5 seconds so not as bad even with bigger waves.
jimski2 Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 As the surface water temperature rises to now, the waves off Dunkirk are twice as high as off Sturgeon Point. The water off shore generates its own weather.Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

jimski2 Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 From the South Gap to near the pier heads all the way to the head of the Buffalo Creek and the North Gap. There is current there all the way to the Niagara River.Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

JustFishin..... Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 You can text the Port Colborne bouy by sending 45142 to 1-866-218-9973. Ive been taking what that says and doubling it. So far so good. Below is an example from the other day. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App 45142 Jul 21, 2019 2:00 pm EST Wind: 9.7 kts @WSW (250) Gust: 9.7 kts AirTemp: 73.2F WaterTemp: 73.0F Wave: 1.3 ft Per: 3 sglbuoys.glos.us
Headshaker Posted August 20, 2019 Report Posted August 20, 2019 Whatever the port colborne buoy shows for wave height double it for accuracy. The better one that is accurate off Dunkirk is https://glbuoys.glos.us/ESF3Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United 1
