Mike14837 Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 The wife and I are planning a weekend trip of walleye fishing out of Dunkirk marina. My question is, how far will we have to go to get into good walleye fishing waters. We only have a 14ft Lund deep v. Just don’t want to get caught in bad weather. Thanks
walnut109 Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 With a 14ft Lund you are going to have to pick your days. Erie kicks up quickly and even a moderate breeze is a concern. Fishing is available right in front of the harbor and your travel distance is less than a mile. It may be a good idea to hire one of the guides for a four hour trip. Good luck.
jimmac Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 Agreed...I used to fish out of a 16ft deep V tiller and had to pick my days, more often than not I got chased off or just too plain uncomfortable. If making a trip I'd opt for a charter rather than hope for safe water on a 14ft'er. Sent from my SM-S727VL using Lake Erie United Mobile App
joe lagreca Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 Check out the NOAA water report for Buffalo to Ripley. You don't want any kind of Northwest West or Southwest wind East and Southeast is the best the harbor used to be terrific until the power plant shutdown.Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Mike14837 Posted June 25, 2019 Author Report Posted June 25, 2019 Excellent, thank you guys, I’m checking on a charter. Maybe I can talk the wife into buying a bigger boat lol
overthelimit Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 Like everyone else said, you really have to pick your days. Not sure how far you have to travel. I fish out of a 16 ft tiller but have off all summer and live 20 minutes from the lake so when it's nice we fish and when its not we stay home.
mr 580 Posted June 25, 2019 Report Posted June 25, 2019 Another option with a 14 ft boat would be looking for perch. Good place to look is right off Dunkirk harbor 40-50 fow. Short run if you have to get off the lake. Even at that really need to pick the right day with that size boat.
