  1. Cabelas has Advance snap releases
  2. Ohio has open walleye season open all year. The bait, tackle, boating agencies are open for use all winter long. New York has a closed season that should be reopened to keep fishing available all year. The BS about spawning walleyes need special protection on Lake Erie so let us end the stupidity with this regulation of a walleye season after Ohio which has more walleyes than ever and is enjoying New York fishermen to have to purchase non resident licenses and burn their New York money to travel, stay, eat and fish there. Open the season here in New York State.
  3. Dredging to start in a few weeks???? , not just year the lake boating is and has been open all most of winter. Come on now, get real to the fishing going on all winter. Boat loads of perch have came in all winter and the dredge gods still have their thumbs stuck some where else.
  4. For free an app on your cell phone can hand you your GPS coordinates for an emergency response to you on the phone and marine radio. Also your position will track your travel on your Lake Erie locations. MERCHANT MARINE APP.
  5. We now have the greatest yellow perch fishery in history since the blue pike were decimated by the smelt hordes that were ignored by our public agencies. Most important now is a good anchor system or an expensive "Spot Lock" gimmick. When Lake Erie surface temperature reaches the high seventy degree range, the fishery will move west of Sturgeon Point to at least 65 foot depths for cooler water temperature. Economically a good anchor can hold your boat in place but you need at least two hundred feet of anchor line for your anchor to hook on the bottom. A three to one length for your anchor to avoid drifting into your neighbors lines. Two hundred foot of poly braided 3/8 line will hold your small boat then. It takes up less space in your small boat and it easily splices together for a neat or bucket. Easier on your hands especially the lighter anchor when you pull it up at the end of your trip.
  6. With side planer boards, the heavy weights could sink your boards. 2 ounce weights are preferred for regular yellow boards that are good producers.
  7. Where can you park your car and trailer along the Hamburg shoreline? The Sturgeon Point Breakwater Repair had nothing to do with the Boat Launching Sites. The sandbar formed this winter is as bad as ever.
  8. After half the summer is gone and the fishery moves to the west, it will open then????????
  9. Wen late summer water temperatures on the surface exceed 72 degrees F. the perch will suspend up to 30 plus feet off the bottom near the Canadian line then and you will raise your minnow baits then off the near bottom. The perch schools will be dense then and catching is easy.
  10. For a $5,00 shipping fee order on line and next day delivery. Save gasoline and $100 if you walk inside the store.
  11. Available at Cabelas.com. Advance snap weights.
  12. You see the pictures. that is the story
  13. 5 boats anchored in a pack off Evangola reef today.
  14. Sturgeon Point Marina, 3 trailers in the lot, small boats, no dredging equipment yet but the tail end of the sand bar is open, boots or oars to get out t seems. No collecters on the job yet. The lake is like glass today.
  15. 18 mile creek parking 12 cars today, water was low and clear, Sisters Creek 2 cars parked, low and clear, Delaware creek, low and clear.
  16. March 17th is the prime minnow catch date in the upper river.
  17. Women want their men to stay home, cut grass and paint. Sitting in a boat drinking beer is a sin.
  18. High wind storms stir the bottom of the near shore waters and when they find an area with lesser currents like the lee side of Sturgeon Point and any other points the suspended sand settles to the bottom and shallows things up. It is a natural condition that happens there and Hamburg Town Park and Woodlawn Beach shores. You can not beat "Mother Nature" until you understand annual dredging is necessary the same as our roads need to have the snow plowed. The only answer is to dredge annually or find a better launch site where a creek cuts its outlet open annually. Eighteen Mile, Sisters, Cattaraugus etc. Dunkirk Harbor is a long trip to drive to and from daily but Crystal Beach , Ontario built a boat harbor with an outlet in deeper water if you care to look it up. Plenty of parking, good ramps in deeper water not in the lee side of the lake currents. The old Bethlehem Steel waters are deeper off shore of the slag fills along with Smokes Creek. But some obstructionists will bring up the walleye spawning effect but Ohio has plenty of walleyes with no seasons or closed areas. Dunkirk Harbor has outlets in deeper water that does not sand up. It just is too long a drive back and forth. The Small Boat Harbor is grid locked on weekends and holidays. Someday after we are gone things could happen, but do not bet on it now.
  19. The state ramp closes to the lake was open now. Only a couple trailers in the lot the other day, good perch fishing now. For walleye drive to Ohio where they have no problem with hook and line fishing as we have here.
  20. The boys boxed out on 13 inch perch Sunday. Flat calm, early morning fog but beautiful early ice free waters were the trick. Bring plenty of minnows, spot the hooks on about 55 foot of water and anchor up. If you see a boat catching, that is good as two boats hold the moving perch schools near by. Each guy uses three hooks per line, three lines are lawful per angler. that puts a lot of bait under your boat. The reservation windmill is good. Lifejackets are the law yet.
  21. Hundreds of boats launched off Woodlawn Beach years ago. A ramp east of the Hotel sold bait and launched boats. The sand bar forms when turbid storm waters near shore settle the the sand debris on the ramps. Crystal Beach in Ontario has a fine ramp and parking lot for all residents and visitors. Good things do not happen here.
  22. The dead zones in Lake Erie are the result of Western Basin agriculture fertilizers from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The plankton growth explodes in the western Basin and results in the dead zones on the lake bottom as the oxygen concentration falls in the deepest waters.
  23. Decaying biologics, plankton, fish, plants consume the oxygen on the lake bottom and the thriving walleyes, etc. will suspend above the low oxygen areas.
  24. For fourteen years I worked gill nets mainly for walleyes in the eastern basin of Lake Erie. After 65 degree surface water temperature the walleyes moved west of Sturgeon Point. The White Dunkirk Fish Tug moved from the eastern basin after the July Fourth, Then it picked up and went off shore of Dunkirk to fish for perch and walleyes there. After the "hook and liners" influenced the regulations to regulate American fishermen and processors out of their jobs, the Canadian industries assumed the harvest and processing business. During the Depression Lake Erie fed a lot of families here. My Grandfather left home at 5:00 AM daily to fish for the local markets.
