Ouija board for weather prediction might help. Seems like when the weather cooperates, fishing is good. And most harnesses work. Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Erie United Mobile App

Fished yesterday solo out of Dunkirk 700-130pm. Water temps were all over the place. Managed to get my first NY Erie limit, 16-21" fish no big ones but I am happy with the nice eaters as well as happy that the future of this fishery looks like it will be great for a few more years at least. Fished 65-80 fow most fish were tight to the bottom, best area was 71 fow temp there was in the 70's on the probe. Had to keep checking the rods as many of the small throwbacks were tagging along for a ride so I probably could have been done earlier. Started out a little bumpy in the morning but then the wind died and the water got almost glass flat. Got fish on blue chatterstick and darker harnesses. DR 67-69 down and dipsey at 1.5 200 feet back (it's a deeper diver). Water temp was 60-72 on the Depth raider probe, there were pockets of warmer water where I got fish and pockets of colder water, this NE wind coming will probably mix things even more. Pequod1, I checked the chart when I was out and supposedly the deeper diver I am using is 83-88 ft with 200 feet of line out but I didn't hit bottom in 71-75 fow. I did go into 67 fow and seemed like it was ticking bottom there. I still generally use the 3 to 1 rule and try setting it out further or closer if not getting hits.

So looking at the weather for Saturday and one site has: Northeast winds 10 to 15 knots increasing to 15 to 25 knots. A chance of showers during the day. Waves 1 to 3 feet building to 3 to 6 feet. Waves occasionally around 7 feet. http://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=lez041#.WXiAlGqou71 and another has: NNE wind 7 to 9 kt. Mostly sunny. Waves 1 ft or less. http://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-78.90990&lat=42.80855#.WXiBK2qou73 I'm not sure which to believe as both are the National Weather service and have been updated 645 am and 430 am today (respectively). But both have tomorrow as 1 ft waves so I am going to try it and will report.

I'm thinking it was pretty close to 70 ft we were in 71 fow so guessing that since we got the laker it was close to the bottom. I have the chart in my boat. I can check for sure when I get home. Were went getting any action on it so I was shortening and lengthing the line out to see if I could get something going on it as well as changing the harness. At one point I had a 6 rod set out and we had all but one in from getting fish.

Went out of Dunkirk Saturday morning. Kept 8, couple of 7 lbers. Then a mix down to 15 inchers that were thrown back. Got a 15 lb laker also a few silvers and sheepshead, heading out we were marking fish all over mostly near the bottom but some were suspended. Best action was 70-75 fow, 65 down. Blue chatterstick was hot bait, also pink and black harness was also good. Laker was on dipsey 200 ft, 1.5 setting with harness. Temps at probe were 69-72. Best action was 71 degrees. I was out of sturgeon yesterday, got one 18". Was pretty slow for me, tried numerous changes but no fish. I was alone so only able to run 3 rods, marked a ton of bait and fish but couldn't get them to hit. temp was 66.7-69 at probe. Went to the fence on the troll, marked most in the 54 ft depth. DEC guy checking fish said it was slow for most only two other boats had fish, one with one fish and another bottom bouncing had 8. Seems like I just need to get one system down and stick with it as it seems like there is almost too much info on what is working (not a complaint). Guys are catching fish using all kinds of different set ups, probably specializing in certain ones.

Yeah I was starting to switch things over to deeper rigs, but we were in the pack when we had fish hit so I was trying to keep everything from tangling. My friend and wife were mostly driving while I was rigging the rods and such. I should have thrown some extra weight on the leadcore as I have the tadpoles in the boat. Also we had to be back by a certain time so only had til 1030-1100 am to fish. I get settled in at times and don't make changes or think about switching things but get lazy and don't. King, what type of downrigger weights are you using? I run 30-40 ft lead off my riggers as everyone said walleye are ball shy, but go shorter for salmon. Guess I'll have to try shorter leads.

Kingslammin, how deep were the dipsies and downriggers set? When I was out we had a 4, 5 and 7 color lead core out and never got a hit on them, I was changing colors of harnesses. The downrigger was right off the bottom as well as the one dipsy I had out. So I set the other DR to similar depth and got a hit. I was going to set up another dipsy but we had stuff going on in the afternoon and had to leave.

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45142 This is a bouy that is in Lake Erie, good for waves (height multiply by 2 for real wave height and frequency-dominant wave period or how fast the waves are coming).

Or keep an eye out in the classifieds section here and on LOU (lake Ontario United) for used equipment, that is in good shape at half the price of new. That is how I got a lot of my stuff to start without the SO getting too mad.

Yep you can find most anything on youtube and google. Also check out this site good info for pulling heavier gear with smaller boards that have been modified. https://bloodruntackle.com/inline-planer-board-modifications/

If you do a search online it will tell you all you need to make the tattle flag from hardware store components except for the flag. Here's a few examples. The biggest issue I had was figuring out the right size wire to use that wasn't too stiff or too light. https://www.google.com/search?q=off+shore+tattle+flag+homemade&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&safe=strict&safe=active&gws_rd=ssl

Good info. I lost one on 490 just outside Leroy one year. Luckily I noticed the wheel wobbling and smoking so I pulled over just past a turnaround. Bearing was shot, so I backed up to get to the turnaround. Took it apart and went to get tools and parts which was a pain as the parts stores took awhile to find the right one. Wasted a day fixing that but luckily I didn't mess the shaft up too much. So now I repack them every year in the spring. One tip make sure you use the right grease as some don't mix well with others. So now I only use one type. Either stick with synthetics or regular grease.
