Thirty miles of Lake Erie shoreline in Erie County with no boating access for the public is a failure of our officials to at least open up the Sturgeon Point boat ramps. Using the Walleye season opener as an excuse to delay opening up the harbor there is a bunch of incompetence. With all the sales taxes, registration fees, fishing license sales collected from the marine community the excuse there is no money says to vote out the do nothing legislators, their stooges and department heads to get something done NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had oil pollution problems at the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Smoke Creek and the Union Ship Canal. The Smoke Creek oil came when an unidentified employee sawed off the stem shaft of a rising stem valve to make it appear it was closed while it was opened fully. An oil recovery operation was operated for years to help prevent its flow into Lake Erie. Other spills came from employees illegally dumping oil into the water return trenches. That oil was recovered by a small boat crew using a boom and a vacuum truck tanker. Millions of your tax recovery dollars were spent to control all types of water and air pollution and ended up squandered with the shutdown of our major employer here in WNY.

Ontario commercial fishery is shut down with all boats tied up.

It may be difficult to believe but the commercial fishing is managed to receive the top dollar for their product, not the maximum poundage. The target perch is about ten inches not 12 to 14 inches. The large perch are left to breed more young ones. The walleye target is 16 to 18 inches, the good eaters we call them. Their price per pound is higher than the jumbo walleye we brag about. Young cattle, chickens and pork with less fat are prime, not chewy soup chickens type as good farmers know. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App -
Every business is shut down since the markets for fish are zero with the restaurant trade closed. The Employment situation is critical there as it is here. We have the same crisis on our east coast with no movement of even frozen stock. Lobster dropped from $10 a pound to less than $2 a pound now. Seafood counters here are almost void of fresh fish. With the nationwide restaurant closings seafood sales are down 75 percent, 3.5 billion dollars sales loss for the seafood industry. If you really want a fish fry, you will need to cook your own catch. Perch are being caught from the Buffalo small boat harbor ramp and the Cattaraugus Creek State ramp on weekends. Miller’s Bait store as well as Dave’s bait store were open now.

Critical infrastructure includes: “Fishing, including persons engaged in subsistence fishing and in the fishing industry including the fisherman, processors, guides, and transporters of the fish as well of those under contract with the fisherman, processors, guides, and transporters for provisioning,” the state has said. New York State officials have over reacted to the virus situation. Personal fishing or commercial sale of fish is essential use. The closing of ramps, docks or marinas can be handled by the mask and separation directives.

On Lake Ontario violators of the separation rules are causing those open ramps to be closed. Single operators or residential family members may be OK but charter boat operators are not accepted due to crowding conditions.

The weather guys are changing this now.

Well if we can not launch anywhere, we can eat lobster. With all the restaurant closures the price of lobster has fallen from $8/$10 a pound to two dollars a pound. Scallops are busting at the seams of cold storage facilities. Thank Albany we were let to get some perch for a while that we clean and eat at home. But Albany screwed us out of them now.

Freighters on the upper lakes are going to sheltered areas and setting their anchors, It is coming here shortly.

Our failure to take more perch and walleyes is because too much fishing concentrated on bass and other fish. A big reason is the cleaning and processing of our catch is a lost art since our youth have no interests in fish cleaning, as well as their parents. At the fishing club meetings very few of the anglers are under 60 years old. Face it fishing has lost interest like pheasant , rabbit and squirrel hunting where cleaning of your game is a lost art.
