Away from the ice field remnants warm water from the west like Ohio and Pennsylvania has warmed up the quicker. More Southwest winds will warm up our end of the lake quicker especially in shore line areas like Woodlawn Beach and the shore line east of Sturgeon Point. With surface temperatures of 38 degrees this morning, there is little difference of waters from surface to bottom. When the surface temperature reaches 42 the yellow perch and walleyes move in to warm beach areas to begin their spawn. The late Fred Kennedy, a Seneca fisherman told of at 2:00 AM the walleye would come into the beach at Brant and the glow of their eyes under a spotlight would be in the thousands as they concentrated there to spawn. The water temperature was the key. At 48 degrees the their spawning was over and they moved offshore where they would suspend near near the surface until the high sun would drive them deeper. The bass move in to spawn on the reefs and rocks near shore at 53 degrees water temperatures. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

There was one boat anchored up off Sturgeon Point yesterday . A dock is in at the ramp. It may be for the contractors. The fee office is boarded up. Five bass boat trailers were at the Catt State Ramp. The Hanover ramp had two docks in. No attendant around. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

Not only the landowners benefit but the Town taxpayers have better local services from the wind mill taxes. I asked a resident about the windmills nearby. He said “ I don’t smell them, see them or hear them. “ My taxes have gone down so what is the problem. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

To install windmills on the water requires a billion dollar Derrick boat with cranes capable of handling the towers. They would have to transport them from European waters which also be very expensive. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

COI CHARTER FISHING PARTY BOAT IN BUFFALO
jimski2 replied to Eastern Front's topic in Open Lake Discussion
As the seasons go by Lake Erie’s water temperature changes the fish are close to the Buffalo Harbor and around of July they begin travel past Sturgeon Point areas to west of the Cattaraugus Creek . By September with cooler nights they return to the Buffalo areas. I base this on over sixty years experience fishing on the lake, both hook and line and gill net operation. Operating a head boat out of Buffalo will not be successful after July 1st. By then the Cattaraugus Creek area is more productive. By late August the fish will return to the Buffalo areas. The success of a head boat operation financially is operating in other areas. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App -

The released perch are not wasted. If the gulls eat them or they sink to the bottom they become forage for the bottom life that consume them. The main considerations are controlled harvest to prevent starvation of the biomass presence in the lake. Stunting down of perch growth and survival is having a balanced harvest. You can only feed a few cows in a pasture till they must be moved. The same management is necessary for fish in the lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App -

The angling catch of yellow perch is less than 25% of the total catch between commercial and angling efforts. Yellow Perch numbers should be under controls as they are a predator of all reproduction of fish in Lake Erie. The fifty perch daily limit is angler processing of the perch catch is estimated. We still need more perch harvested and cutting the limit should be a personal determination. Just take only what you can clean and process when you get home. There are too many laws on the books in New York State that are a knee jerk reaction to a perceived and unstudied issues. I fished the Wiscoy Creek April 1st and counted three automobiles while the East Koy Creek had hundreds of vehicles. The Wiscoy is managed for natural reproduction while the East Koy is stocked with hatchery fish. Now things here will not change, a small user group had their way and now it will not change. -

The ice here could be similar since the Lake Erie ice field has been compacted by heavy southwest winds also. Our Niagara River flow may be cold for a longer time now. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App

Down in the southern tier now, most streams are low and clear. These are mid summer conditions I have never seen it my lifetime for opening day. Some rain is forecast but the fields are clear of melting snow Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
