One day in the summer I walked the shoreline at the foot of Catherine Street. I saw bass everywhere. No one really knows the fishery we have there. The Buffalo Creek watershed is a secret in our back yard. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
It is a lot longer boat ride to Seneca Shoals, Meyers Reef, Eighteen Mile Creek, Wanakah Shoals, and Woodlawn Bay Area where the early night walleyes are. The bass fishing starts there also. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Sturgeon Point is nothing but a sand trap as is the Hamburg site. Woodlawn Beach launched hundreds of small boats till the Town closed it off. So Southtowns boaters are stuck with long distant travel to access the lake. The Walleye Club members have their access so they are not motivated any more for access sites. The thirty mile drive to the Cattaraugus Creek sites is a waste of precious time and gasoline. Let us realize that we need something else on our Lakeside waters. The boat launch need not be in the creek . A basin can be excavated similar to Sturgeon Point with a separate lake entrance. The slag dump is on lake bottom that can be returned to open lake water that was belonging to New York State. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Fishing travel distance would be shorter from the Smoke Creek site. More time and fuel will be saved. There is a lot of unused property there for parking. Oh, the fish are closer there[emoji177][emoji17] Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
A greater benefit there would be near shore fishing for non boaters. In my youth days we would out fish the boaters fishing the nearby deep waters from the shore line. Perch were really productive there in the spring time.
Since the extension of Dona Street at the traffic light there access to Smokes Creek and Lake Erie could easily made available. Some obstructing group will complain about walleyes spawning there but they still will. It is only three miles to Seneca Shoal from there. Driving to Sturgeon Point Marina or Cattaraugus Creek ramps is unnecessary for good fishing early in the season. Grid lock at the Safe Harbor ramp and parking lot will be lessened. The land under the slag piled there still belongs to New York State. With local rainfall of thirty inches a year for over thirty years any chemicals there have been flushed away. The Town of Hamburg Park ramp is useless after a few storms sand it up. Now with a new access road at Dona Street opening we have the first opportunity to access our lake front . On 11/10/1884 a seiche event sent a wall of water through the streets of Buffalo, NY. 50 residents died in the flood and ships and crews on the lake were lost by the dozens. Be aware that history repeats itself. What we had earlier is nothing compared to that event.
Canada has thousands of wind towers, not in Lake Erie but near shore. A flight to Detroit will open your eyes up. They are not stupid to put them in our drinking water supply. They will start a war if our politicians dump wind mills in their lake, Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Buffalo Harbor took a big hit. With a plus 2 lake level and a 7 foot seiche on top the 15 foot swells hammered our waterfront. Preceding the big blow the area 2 and a half inch rainfall. Streams were at extreme high flows and they carried a lot of trees and debris into the lake. This really caused more of a mess. Many lakefront sea walls collapsed and cottages close to the water are now condemned. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
We caught buckets of rainbow trout back drifting flat fish on the Canadian shoreline from the Peace Bridge to Thompson’s Hole. The Canadian record walleye of 22 pounds was caught from shore in Thompson’s Hole. Entering Canadian water is a hassle now.
Winds with eighty mph were measured at Port Colborne. Our lake level was near plus two feet and the seiche effect coupled created over nine foot lake level at the Buffalo end of the lake. Adding to this is waves pounding the shoreline causing property damage. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
A Canadian contest winner for walleyes was using a rubber goby lure in near shore waters. Most walleyes have small perch minnows in their stomach contents . Check their contents, a lack of bait out on the lake is changing things. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
Fly from Buffalo to Detroit. You will see windmills by the thousands, but zero in the Lake. But politicians in Ohio are planning on changing this off Cleveland. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
