I wish I knew........

You and me both lineman.......... I've got killer B's in blue/silver and green/silver that have teeth marks in them everywhere..... and now all I fish are harnesses....... what's up with that? I used to fish alot out of Erie, Pa, and kept good records on baits and successful presentation. I can remember fishing the trenches out of Walnut, and we'd get most fish on deep plugs on the boards until Mid July, and after that it was shallow divers or NK28's on riggers..... pre zebra mussels.... those were the days. I can remember one evening putting a 24 fish limit in the boat in 2 hours...... it was brutal.

Welcome Capt..... I've been running Garmin units for the past 7 or 8 years, and have enjoyed using them. They are simple to operate, reasonably priced, and technically competitive. I used to be a Lowrance fan, but like Lineman, had several repair issues, and swore them off......

Last year while fishing off the Windmills in 25-30, we got one sheepshead that had 3 leaches attached to the gills...... anybody ever seen that? I figured he must have been in a creek or estuary area and picked them up. But they were pretty nasty looking on the poor bugger....... cottonwood was brutal that day, and it triggered the recall.....

Out of Olcott Sat. am ....... 4 for 6....... nothing over 15 lbs....... sounds like everybody had about the same success...... all our bites came in 180 - 220. We looked as shallow as 80 and as deep at 300, but it seemed like anybody who wanted to play was right around 200..... we took hits as deep as 95, and as shallow as 35..... spoons and spinny/fly...... no real pattern for us.

Walleye Small Boat Harbour Sat May 27

garrymny..... The best thing to do right now is wait. Warmer water will definitely help with daytime walleye fishing. I've had limited success until late June or early July, and I usually fish Ontario until then. I live 2 hours from Lake Erie, and usually can glean enough information from posts to know when and where to go. For now, get your lead core set ups ready, get a couple divers ready, and wait for the water to push into the mid 60's. Perch is another topic. For them, you gotta find them to catch them. And that can be a challenge without an information network...... But keep at it, and whether you catch 1 or a limit, enjoy the time fishing Erie. She's one of a kind................... -

Taking a walleye charter out of the port of your choice would be a good way to get started....... I'll bet that if you'd have done that prior to your dozen trips, you'd have boated plenty of fish "on your own". -
Certainly not a an answer from a "leadcore pro"....... You can put the core in the release, but that will "fix" the distance behind the board the lure will be running at. It will be running at 2 or 3 colors plus your leader. I like to standardize my leader length and "manipulate" the backing length payed out to the clip. Say 25 ft leaders, and 100 feet of backer. Then you have the option of letting out more backer if fish want longer leads that day. Often, the higher the fish are in the water column, the further back from the boat they want the bait. Also, getting consistant releases from leadcore in release clips has been problematic for me, as well as wear on the core sheath.

Thanks for all the tips here...... I've been using 6 lb braid, and sensitive rods, but I didn't realize the beads or hooks could be so critical, so thanks for sharing that. Any tips on finding fish away from the pack..... what to look for? And trapper..... does the dynamite require a special license?
-
When you're looking for perch away from the pack, are you strictly looking for fish marks? Or looking for structure(depressions or bumps) that holds fish? Or some combination of this. So far, I've just been looking for marks, but it feels like the needle in the haystack approach. Sometimes it's successful, and most times it's not. I'm not local, and only make it to Erie a couple of times a year for perch, and it's tempting to run to the pack but I don't like to listen to all that noise. The fish I got yesterday were well away from everyone else..... but it took 1/2 the day to find them and even then, they weren't stacked up on each other.

33 perch, 3 walleye, and 1 laker yesterday out of the Catt. 60 FOW. The laker was a surprise, but it explains some of the marks I was seeing. The walleye(12 - 14") all came from one spot while hunting the perch. My screen never looked like yellowpikes screen above....... wow! Groups of fish would come and go, but at least it was action.

How Does Wind Direction Affect Eastern Basin
J. Sparrow replied to Shorthanded's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Ok..... I see that..... but I didn't realize there were hypoxic zones(DO<2mg/L) east of Presque Isle.......all the maps I've seen are a central basin phenomenon, roughly Cleveland to Conneaut. http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/visions/ocean_research/image2.html -

Colder water holds more dissolved O2 than warmer water. -

If you're targeting Browns, there are lots of good shoreline options........ if it were me, I'd stick to the River/Bay area........ my .02 There are Browns to be caught off Olcott any time the lake is fishable between now and October....... just change your tactics a bit..... and you can say that about most of the Lake Ontario shoreline. Some places are better than others, but there are plenty of Browns to be caught all summer long.......

Big motor on...Bow-mounted trolling motor on?

I do what fishmaster described...... use the kicker "locked" in a position that pushes the boat straight, and then use the "autopilot" on the bow mount electric motor to steer. There are two course setting features on the MinnKotas...... I may not have this right, but if you push the autopilot button and release, the autopilot steers to a line of individual points. If you push the ap button and hold it for a few seconds it will hold the heading it was on when pushed...... you want the "hold the button for a few seconds" method..... -
I'm thinking the East end guys are con, and the West end guys are pro.......... I'm an East end guy, and against it, but I can see how the argument could be made that other factors control walleye populations more than fishing during the spawn. Still, it just doesn't feel right to me. But, by that rationale, perch should also be protected in the spring........ and that ain't gonna happen.

I grew up in Erie, and as a kid, I remember fishing PI Bay every day one summer (1975)..... bass, bass, and more bass...... Our house was 1 block from the hill to the bayfront...... It was a great place to grow up.... and we even stayed out of trouble.....mostly.
