pap replied to Flybuster's topic in Lure Making & Basement Baits
Thank Flybuster, holy shyt I never gave them a thought. We have a huge hobby shop near by, my daughts had a prodject and one picked the Titanic, and I took her there I was floored when I saw there selection. Do you do a primer before paint or just make sure they are free of oils. Thanks for the help. Pap -
How many of you paint/make your own
pap replied to Flybuster's topic in Lure Making & Basement Baits
WOW those are really nice!!! I asked some guys on lou the type guns and stuff they used, because my daughter wanted one for Christmas. Believe it or not Santa brought one for her, all the while I was pushing this idea, we are getting better but she is way more talented then I. I have purchased different stencils for scales patterns. The one thing I'm in the dark about is what type of paint to use. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. As of now we're using water based paints, just for easy clean ups. Thanks for any help PAP -

Thanks flybuster, that's a bunch of good info, I'm going to have to get me some hatchet blades. The last time I was out the western end guys introduced me to the hatchet blades, so I guess they work. I was kind of having mixed thoughts about them, old school I guess you could say. Thanks again for your input!! pap.

I was wondering on Erie what speeds do you run harneses, As a general rule of thumb. Then when you mix sticks into the play, I assume you bump up your speed. Most of what I read and hear is the dipsy is the go to way of getting lures and harnesses down. I would assume snap weights are used also. What about spoons, I fished the western basin and the Port Clinton area, which I liked both areas, two entirely different ways of fishing. One year was a jig bite close to shore, the next year they were coming off the jig bite and were hitting worm harneses. Port Clinton was worm harneses and Michigan stinger spoons. So my question is with the different lures what is the general rule of speeds for harneses, then sticks and last but not least spoons? One other thing is color, what's the common color that guys out there prefer. I'd like to know a few so I can prepare myself for June. Thanks for any help I would really appreciate that!! PAP.

New Old guy here
pap replied to Sluggo / NY's topic in Welcome to Lake Erie United - Introduce Yourself
Hey Sluggo glad to see ya made it, and I'm glad you did!!! I know you helped me out with a roof over my head, and other places to fish if there's a big blow!! PAP -
Yea Justin that jerks me sideways everytime also, I'm like shut up who cares!! Put the damn fish back in the water. Another thing I saw on that show is when their trolling for Muskies they stick a rod in the water close to the boat on each side and another one in the back behind the driver then pipe how this won't create the lines to cross when doing the long sweeping turns. They must think we are all idiots, first off why not put the rod holder at the widest point of the boat " they say they are using different length rods" I don't give a shyt how long the or short the rods are at the most they are, is only 3ft in differance and with a 150 or more foot of line out that 3 feet might as well be 3 inches. Well one show it failed and they had a mess, I was surprised they showed it, how about how they net the big boys,I don't know if those real floppy big nets are rubber coated or not, but as careful as your supposed to be I never saw them cut a hook off one their 20-30$$ lure. Their boring and gouging with a lineman's pliers, then lift the fish out by one gill plate talk about this, that and the other thing all advertising what ever made the catch possible, then put the fish in the water. So much for ethical fishing as long as they convince people into thinking "man I need to get some of those things"

Yea duhnter8, I've been a member of LOU, I hope a lot of the eye guys hop over here, with others from the outside. LakeO will never be what Erie is and I don't quite understand why it couldn't be better than it is, don't get me wrong LakeO gives some good eye fishing, but let's face it if you fished Erie and then had to fish LakeO it would be a bit differant, am I right?

Another blade that I use with a lot of faith as it has proven itself in LakeO,Canada, and was advised to try it on Erie was the lure called the cicada, on the rip up it vibrates like mad, they also come in many colors and weights. During the jig bite in the western basin of Erie was the most success, but it didn't out perform like the jig heads that Happy Hooker bait shops sells tipped with a minnow, it's crazy fast and exciting fishing. In Canada I used a lure it was 2"long and 3/8" wide it had a hammered surface in a polished silver color with a white feather like material around the hook that was attached to the weight via a split ring, just jigging the lure in 30 plus foot of water produced quality walleye not quantity. Tipping the hooks with a night crawler made the fish hang on a little longer providing better hook ups and less just waked at hits, a old Indian guide up there told me where and how to use the lure, if the fish are on the bottom fish for them with this lure he said. He was correct, I came back to the dock with 5 fish all over 3-4#'s the guys were amazed, as they were napping getting ready for the night bite, which those fish were the general run of the mill all, well we kept 18" on up, but no big females. Just a little of my experiences with different blades. Hope you find it interesting. PAP

This year I was introduced to the Cast Master by a semi-pro bass fisherman who claims he catches many eyes while fishing for bass. I got to go along with David on his new bass boat, well that takes some getting used to, when your sitting in the seat you can touch the water, as to 3ft gunnels, anyway we went to a lake called Wallenpawpack, launched at the newer ramp by the dam, it took some time to get the hang of using the lure, as the fish usually hit it on the way down. David showed me and once I got a grip on it the lure became very useful, there was 3 of us on the boat myself and David we fished the Cast Master and my uncle used all kinds of rubber, drop shots he caught a pickerel and David caught 5 or more Lake Erie size smallies and I caught 3 smallies. David did a little better as he had the next size down from mine, so he dug through his bag and found another in the same size as his. You are absolutely correct as to you need braided line, you can actually feel the fish hit the spoon, and he said you need to set the hook as soon as you feel anything!!! The spoons are metal and they will spit the lure quick. So I have purchased a few in differant weights/sizes and color, David had a perch colored one and I had gold/silver, his did out perform mine as he caught a catfish and other species of fish also. They do work. I wish I would have caught an eye to give me a little more boost to give them a whirl in LakeO or Erie.

This year our group is going to split up, my one uncle who usually fishes with me is going with our other family members to Canada to fish Lake O'Sullivan for their last time as their 75+ and still go good for their age, which we have fished over 30 years. I'm not going which kind of has the family a little rattled to say the least. I've fished the western basin out of Oak Orchard/Turttle creek I fished Port Clinton which is were we did the best, and this year I'm going the 2nd week of June to fish the eastern basin of Erie, I'm hoping that it will be as good I can't see how it could be less than stellar, from what I read and was told in person, buy guys from home that have fished eastern basin for years. They are going with me so I have a foot in the door already and of course Erie United. This will be great, thanks Chad for all the pain staking work and a wonderful job to say the least. I'm a member of Walleye Central for years, I've noticed posts about this site on there, most were positive as most Ohio fisherman are they rank right up there with Up State NY hunters and fisherman.!!!

We took a charter out of middle basin just as the jig bite was transferring over to spinner harnesses, and the charter Capt. said they use #5 hammered gold blade, we had a 6 man ticket in four hours, since then I've been using the #5's in the spring till about 2nd week of June then I switch to hard baits. Rats Bomber long A's Smithwicks Rapalas J13's black tops prism silver sides and. Orange bellies even if I have to paint them myself.

That's sweet, people have asked why are you buying such big baits, I thought you were a walleye guy, well I got a theory I'm going to try. The Muskie guys are saying they are catching these fish at speeds unheard of for eyes, so on days when the general rule of thumb isn't working, going to give this theory a shot!! Bump up the speed, go big or go home!!!
