  1. Saturday 9/30- With the lighter winds the warm water was back. For my last trip from Dunkirk ended with 13 walleye and a nice steelhead. Good number of boats out and the fish cleaning station was busy. Best water for me was 90 to 100 a bit west. Should be plenty of fish around as long as weather stays decent.
  2. Come Fish Lake Erie site is a one stop shop for Eastern Lake Erie. Pick your port, pick your target species then get a list of Captains. With one click you are on their site for details and rates. Free to use and free for Captains in New York waters. As Larry has pointed out this marketing campaign is just getting rolling in the promotion of Charter Fishing in New York waters of Lake Erie. Should bring some positive attention to our great fishing. If you haven’t be sure to visit Come Fish Lake Erie site.
  3. A Daiwa 47 is small for a 10 color Micro lead. I used to use Penn 330’s years ago on my ten colors and a Daiwa Saltist 50 with Micro lead fishes so much easier even for inexperienced charter clients. For less bucks than a Saltist, Daiwa 57LC’s are an option. I use 57’s with 250 Walleye Copper and intermediate cores over 5 colors. I feel for a reel to work right that you need a fair amount of backer plus running back and off boards takes out more line. Thanks for tip on that knot- always have to look to tweak your setups. You might have talked to me at Niagara Show as I worked some in Innovative Outdoors booth and explained difference in Tuff Line Microlead and regular leadcore to a number of people.
  4. I have used the Tuff line Micro lead for a few years. Here is my opinion. Pros are you can use a smaller reel for long cores. Put it on a high speed reel and a 10 color isn’t a problem for inexperienced anglers. Cons are you can’t use a Willis knot/overhand Chinese finger as diameter is tough to work with. I use Tuff line micros on my 10 colors on Daiwa 50 and double uniknot to connect. I use Stealth core for all my shorter lead core setups. I think I tried one spool of Suffix and didn’t see any great difference to standard leadcore. Been using the Tuff line and Stealth core for probably 3 years or more. No issues.
  5. If you want a voice in the Lake Erie fishery as a weekend warrior, sportsman or charter captain then JOIN AN ORGANIZATION AND GET INVOLVED. Eastern Lake Erie Charter Boat Association (ELECBA) has both Captain, Mate and Associate memberships. Why should a person join? Besides receiving Federal Cares Funding from NOAA that requires those funds to be spent only for the direct promotion of the Charter industry in NY waters of Lake Erie, ELECBA has members playing key roles in Erie & Chautauqua County Federation of Sportsmen, New York Conservation Council, voting member of Lake Erie Management Council and NYSDEC outreach with Region 9 WNY Environmental group. Some recent ELECBA activities- helped get Sturgeon Point opened in 2022, supported building of kayak launches at Hanover, Dunkirk and Barcelona, and updated fish cleaning facilities in Hanover and Dunkirk. The initial funding requests for Cares Act by ELECBA included adding wheelchair lifts to our harbors and dock rehabilitation in Dunkirk- NOAA would not accept those requests due to the narrow use of the funds. So there are people doing things and we do have some voice in political events. However the number of active people is small and we need more voices and active members. So join an organization and become active- if you don't want to join ELECBA join your local sportsman's club, NYCCC, or County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs - they are all looking for members. Sportsmen need to realize that there is only a small number of people advocating for them and it is important to take part so your voice is heard. As Larry Jones has commented that this Cares Act Funding is a big deal and gives NY Lake Erie Charter Fish a big boost with the "Come Fish Lake Erie" initiative. It also shows that a handful of committed people can get things done with persistence, fortitude and dedication. It took a couple years and some sweat to make that happen. Get involved with the group of your choice. If you want info on ELECBA then contact Larry Jones or Frank Schoenacker.

  10. Big sheepshead, catfish or laker would be interesting too. How would you net on a 2 or 3 foot lead? I see more minus than positives with this program. Could be a good way to stuff a downrigger cable into a prop-things get real interesting when that happens.
  11. No cleaning station in Barcelona due to lack of sewer system at the harbor. Was studied when new grinders were done at Hanover and Dunkirk in last couple years.
  12. Getting fish in both basins. Some real nice fish this year. On 6/28 had 7 quality eyes with two at 24". Weed lines with crawler harness's

  13. Mid to late July, Dunkirk would a good spot to work from. Lots of places to stay and you can launch from Dunkirk or Cattaraugus Creek. Can work a variety of depths. Should be plenty of walleyes available especially “eater” size, getting a 10lb one you’ll likely sort through a few to find one. Should be able to get fish from boards with leadcore, divers and riggers.
  14. With warmer water, the daytime walleye bite has been pretty good along and in the weeds. Some pics from some recent trips.

  16. In the past when I’ve fished off Cleveland it was an open water bite and by mid July likely offshore. Think planer boards, divers approach would be more productive than jigging as the fish are relating more to bait than structure. You could fish NY water off Dunkirk or the Catt to try Erie fishing before heading west.
  17. Misdirection is right on. Big boards easier when you have different people on board. Bigger boats have room to store boards, mast, planer reels. For smaller boats with less storage, in lines are a better option. Both are very effective and what works for your crew and your boat is the best choice.
  18. Posting edited 2/28/21 to show Price with shipping to domestic US for both groups.
  19. Charter Boat Captains if you are interested in joining an organization that offers drug testing plus other group benefits, consider Easter Lake Erie Charter Boat Association. Now is the time to sign up and it is easy to do. Links to ELECBA website right from LEU and website has links to membership forms along with benefits of membership. If you have questions just use the contact link and one of our officers will get back with you. After doubling in size in 2020, ELECBA is looking to continue to grow for 2021. Our current membership has Captains fishing Eastern Lake Erie, Niagara River, and Western Lake Ontario. Looking forward to hearing from you! Capt Frank Schoenacker/Infinity Charters- Treasurer ELECBA

  23. I’ve run them inside of lead core no problem. Also set them on boards over slide divers no problem. Couple years ago I was running three short coppers on one side and ran into a school of junk fish- they wadded up all three lines- real big mess. To me, it works but lead core easier to deal with.
  24. Running 250 walleye blood run copper on Daiwa 57 LC - figure it gets down around 60 foot. Like how that fishes compared to some shorter coppers I have played with.
